Many of the communication aspects from chapter one interested me. The three that intrigued me the most were interpersonal, intrapersonal, and mass communication. Interpersonal communication is used in our lives frequently. We use this form to interact with others daily and is a key in work settings. Most jobs today deal with face to face communication and mastering this aspect will make us more effective in group work. Also, interpersonal communication is more goal oriented than the rest of the forms of communication. I enjoyed reading about this form of communication because it gave me a heads up on how to successfully communicate with people. I know that once I graduate I will apply interpersonal communication more effectively. Another form of communication that stood out to me was intrapersonal communication. This form of communication is important to me because it’s how we communicate with ourselves, it's our “ self talk.” What interests me the most about this form of communication is that it all takes place in our heads. As I was reading about intrapersonal communication I realized that I do it every day. From the second I wake up to the second I go to sleep I constantly think through things such as my plans for the day. I lay in bed after a long tiring day and process everything I did the whole day and think “ how did I get through all that in one day?”
The third aspect that interested me was group communication. We all used this form of communication throughout high school and in college. Looking back at it now I hated it a lot. There was always that one person who dominated the group, the person who never did anything , and the person who just wanted all the work to be divided up equally. I was always the last one of course. In the end, all of my group members shared the same goal and worked together to achieve it. Being at Alverno taught me not to just go with the flow from the rest of my group members. It taught me to become a better group leader and to speak up when I felt that my group wasn’t going to achieve our ultimate goal. I know that once I graduate I will continue to use group communication at my job when it applies.
I am a Business Management Major with supports in Adult Education and Communications. It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do but I continued to be patient and look into different career paths. My goals are to continue researching companies to intern with and see which ones fit best with my major and minre more. As of right now I’m looking into interning for We Energies where I would be training their employees. I’m extremely excited to discover where my major and supports take me.
Mass communication and group communication are two different things. Mass communication has to do with media, radio, facebook, youtube ect. Group communication has to do with what you wonderfully explained in your post. I liked your reflection about yourself that shows growth! I like your explanations about inter and intra personal communications it shows that you've read and effectively understood the material. I also liked how you used yourself as an example because it made a connection between you and what you read. I think that the pictures were appropriately placed in between the paragraphs it provided a nice break in between them which made for a smoother read.
ReplyDeleteFrom what you stated about intrapersonal communication, it is interesting to reflect on how important our own self talk affects the other forms of communication. Our different mindsets and self talk is what separates everyone socially, in different ways.
ReplyDeleteInterpersonal on the other hand (like you said) is also very important because it is what builds, maintains, and ends our relationships. However, I wouldn't say that interpersonal is more goal-oriented then the rest of the groups, it is indeed goal-oriented but this form of communication can be planned or unplanned since it is so interactive.
