Tamara Ocasio CTP #4

While watching the Fox6 nightly new with my mom. I noticed there was a variety of topics that were talked about.

The first thing the anchors talked about was the weather forecast for the next few days. This is something that usually happens in the beginning of the nightly new.

The next segment was about the Botanical Gardens China Light Show. They spent about 3-4 mins talking about the different aspects of the light show and interviewing one of the owners (Caucasian, maybe mid-late 30's), I believe, and about employee (early-mid 30s, chinese) that explained how they flew in about 17 people directly from China just to work on the light show displays.

The news anchors talked apple picking season and how a lot of orchards are beginning to get a lot of business.

The next segment was about lice. They interviewed two people (2 Caucasian people, one male, one female, both definetly older that 40) They talked about how lice products could not be working correctly and could have some health risk. However, one thing that I did notice was the only visual examples they were showing were of children of some ethnic background; mainly Hispanic or Asian.

After that segment, the repeated the same information for the weather

The next segment that I watched them talk about was new information regarding the Laylah Peterson case. For those that aren't familiar, there is someone on trial for being involved in a drive by shooting that caused the death of a young girl. The segment explained the new testimony that was said in court by a young black man that claims he knew about the shooting and called the police once he found out that there was a little girl that was killed as a result of the shooting.

The last segment they talked about was voting. How to vote and where to find the information about registering and voting.

After watching the news, I was actually surprise. I normally so much more about shootings and deaths. This was probably the first time I sat down to watch the news and they really wasn't anything negative. I did notice that they did talk about about the case a little bit, which kind of made me a little upset, but all in all, it was pretty descent. I did make mention of this to my mom and she told me I would have to watch the news at 6pm in order to see stories like that...

  1. That's surprising that the majority of the news was so positive for you, as generally there is usually more violence or bad things in the news. Although that lice thing seems a little off with the random children.

  2. It is interesting how the news segments you saw were mostly positive. I also watched Fox 6 and once again it was mostly white males but I saw a few more negative stories. Most of the topics yours covered however were fairly different than mine, even though we both watched the same station.
