Friday evening , I put on the CNN news and observed what the stories were at that time. The top story at that time was the Charlotte, North Carolina shooting. The story is about Keith Lamont who was shot and killed by Charlotte police a few days ago.  Charlotte police say that Lamont had a gun with him and that’s why the shoot him , his wife was at the scene  and yells that he has a TBI ( traumatic brain injury)   and that he isn’t going to  harm them and has no gun. Keith’s wife was at the scene and recorded it all. The footage from her phone was released Saturday and the public is furious. His family says that Keith  was holding a book in his hand, police said it was a gun. Later there was a gun found at the scene with Keith’s prints and blood on it. His wife and family say that there’s no way that could have been his gun, he doesn’t even own one. The family and public are asking for the police to release the dash camera video  but police say that’ll affect the investigation.

Charlotte has had protests for the past four days, demonstrators carried signs and chanted peacefully.

Wolf Blitzer  a caucasian male in his late sixties was covering the story. Other races spoke about the incident.  Two African Americans spoke , one was Marc Morial who’s  the president  of National Urban League and is in his fifties. He was discussing how the police need to release the dash cam video so we all can see what really happened.  An African American Charlotte police officer  who looked in his mid -forties said they don’t want to release the video because it may interfere with the investigation. I thought that was interesting how both men had different opinions on releasing the video.  I also thought it was odd how caucasian cops were the ones at the scene , but they didn't speak to the public. They had an African American officer talk about what happened. It would have made more sense if the officers who were on the scene would have spoken to the public.  Overall I thought it was okay news, I can’t say it was bad or good because it was in between for me It was good because it showed people who had a different perspective of the incident but it was also bad because I wanted to see what the caucasian officers had to say.

My findings somewhat reflect what I’ve read this week. Gerbner's Cultivation theory  studies the long- term effect of television. The more time people spend in television world,  the more likely there believe the reality shown on television . CNN is one of most viewed news channel , therefore the viewer's attitudes are shaped by what’s on television. If viewers see that the news didn’t make an incident a big deal, the viewers won’t see it as a big deal or issue. I think that CNN did make the Keith Lamont story big and brought attention to the viewers.  Keith Lamont  deserves justice.
