Kailee Sharrow Blog #4

For this task, I watched Fox6 News at 9pm. I never really watched the news, but from this task I realized how important the news can be in order to stay updated about your surroundings.

Most of the things they went over were super quick. I thought it was pretty interesting how a newscaster can title a topic and within a minute give a description and fact on that topic. For example, one of the first things they talked about was a man named Raymond Barfield. Then they told a quick story on him. He is an african american male who stole a car in 2011, stole another car in 2015, escaped out of the police van when arrested, and just now caught again for trying to rob someone and steal her purse. They mentioned his criminal record multiple times, and ended with the fact that he is now back in jail. Switch segment....

I found this to be bad news, but what really interested me was the amount of times they showed the footage (taken by a bystander..?) of Raymond escaping out of the stopped and open van and running away. Why didn't they catch him? Why was the truck just stopped and open? Who really took the video? Instead of talking about his criminal record I think they were more important facts to discuss..

Another topic was on Carl Barrett. Carl was involved in a drive-by shooting. One of the men involved meant to shoot someone els's house when they shot through the wrong window. The bullet hit a 6-year old girl who was sitting on her grandfather's lap. Barrett faces 2 first degree counts but pleaded not guilty. The other two men involved have reached plea deals. This is bad/sad news. It just shows the stupidity of violence in our city. My heart breaks for the little girl who passed away and her family.

On another topic, I thought it was interesting how much time they spent going over "Trail cam catches woman stealing man's trump campaign signs: Politics aside it's theft"
The newscasters decided to talk about this segment for quite some time. They interviewed the owner of the property who said many of his signs get stolen so he set up a camera in the tree to catch the stealers. The one footage he had was of a middle aged women.. The man doesn't care, he simply said the cops will find the thieves, and that it doesn't matter because he has plenty more signs. Yes this involved stealing so yes this is bad news. It was annoying though how long they spent discussing and interviewing this guy when instead the newscasters could explain more of the campaign.

There were some good segments I got out of watching the news like... The China lights that was put together with extravagant art pieces at the botanical gardens. This involves a fun and educational place to go for family and friends. It's important to bring people together by learning and exhibiting new cultures. Another thing I think is good news is the focus on sports. Seeing how "bad" milwaukee is and is put out to be, I believe sports bring us together as people to give us something to talk about, and involves harmful competition to the viewers. It gives us something to talk about and have common interest in. Along with that segment involved a quick segment on many Milwaukee official men coming together to provide feedback and input on potential solutions on public safety issues.

Only a handful of segments seemed to be "good" news while I watched an hour newscast. Many of the segments focused on crime, danger, and killings.

While watching the Fox6 nightly new with my mom. I noticed there was a variety of topics that were talked about.

The first thing the anchors talked about was the weather forecast for the next few days. This is something that usually happens in the beginning of the nightly new.

The next segment was about the Botanical Gardens China Light Show. They spent about 3-4 mins talking about the different aspects of the light show and interviewing one of the owners (Caucasian, maybe mid-late 30's), I believe, and about employee (early-mid 30s, chinese) that explained how they flew in about 17 people directly from China just to work on the light show displays.

The news anchors talked apple picking season and how a lot of orchards are beginning to get a lot of business.

The next segment was about lice. They interviewed two people (2 Caucasian people, one male, one female, both definetly older that 40) They talked about how lice products could not be working correctly and could have some health risk. However, one thing that I did notice was the only visual examples they were showing were of children of some ethnic background; mainly Hispanic or Asian.

After that segment, the repeated the same information for the weather

The next segment that I watched them talk about was new information regarding the Laylah Peterson case. For those that aren't familiar, there is someone on trial for being involved in a drive by shooting that caused the death of a young girl. The segment explained the new testimony that was said in court by a young black man that claims he knew about the shooting and called the police once he found out that there was a little girl that was killed as a result of the shooting.

The last segment they talked about was voting. How to vote and where to find the information about registering and voting.

After watching the news, I was actually surprise. I normally so much more about shootings and deaths. This was probably the first time I sat down to watch the news and they really wasn't anything negative. I did notice that they did talk about about the case a little bit, which kind of made me a little upset, but all in all, it was pretty descent. I did make mention of this to my mom and she told me I would have to watch the news at 6pm in order to see stories like that...

Katie Ludwiczak: CTP Blog #4

I have never actually taken the time to sit down and watch the news. Maybe because I only get three channels in my dorm room? I think I hooked up my TV wrong, but thats not the point. I have never found the certain joy in watching the news as most people do. I decided to tune into Fox6 News for the first time in a long time and learned something - the news likes to cover the weather, politics, events, and tragedies around the area. The order in which they covered everything were as follows: Weather, tragedy, potential jobs coming to Milwaukee, Presidential Debate and campaign stops, Ro-bo Advisors, Race for the Cure, and back to the weather forecast.

In my opinion, the news tries to get the bad news out of the way first. For example, they have a segment called Tragedy. In this segment they briefly cover a man drowning in a lagoon in Mitchell Park, which is still a developing story. They then moved quickly to a different story of a shooting that happened in Milwaukee involving three men, Arlis Gordon, Carl Barrett, and Paul Farr. They claimed to have opened fire on the wrong house, injuring the woman that lives there. They covered this segment in no more than two minuets.

After that, they mentioned how there were going to be over 2,000 jobs making it's way into Milwaukee through the postal services. I did not really pay attention to this part of the broadcast because finding a job right now does not apply to me as much as it would for other individuals.

Next, the news jumped to politics, everyones favorite subject. Did you feel the sarcasm there? As I was watching this segment of the news, I noticed that they only cared to talk about Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton. They did not mention the third party at all. On the broadcast, they brought in the mayor of Milwaukee, who is a supporter of Clinton, and Van Mobley, the president of the Village of Thiensville, who is a supporter of Trump. They both gave their reasoning as to why they were supportive of the Democratic party or Republican party, both very interesting. Fox 6 reporters then mentioned when the candidates, or people representing the candidates are coming to the Milwaukee area.

The news then switched to Ro-bo Advisors. Apparently Ro-bo Advisors are bringing in the big bucks for many companies. Although it is helping companies, Ro-bo Advisors cannot help with many personal finances.

Race for the Cure! This topic mainly showed women, children, and an extended amount of pink. They talked about when and where the event took place.

The news then ended with the weather forecast once again explaining how the weather was sever, but it was nothing to worry about. The meteorologist then went over the weather for the week once again.

8-Campaign Debate-Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump Debate On Monday. It calls my attention because the Governor of New York is in Milwaukee and I saw some Latino for Hilary Signs. Good news it about politics.

Media only give us little chunks of information but not the whole picture. In the readers they go very fast in what, when, who and how things happened. In a story packages they go in more detail information and got me more engaged in watching. After the newscast was over, the only 2 topics that I can probably recall the most is about the weather today was hot, hot, because all the news anchor, weather anchors and sports anchor make a big deal of that topics every time. Also all of them did a big deal about the packagers winning Today. The Story that also I recall because is connected to my Latino heritage is the Tragic dead of baseball player Jose Fernandez because he is a Latino, he died in a boat accident today and he was very young. By the time I was finishing doing my homework it’s really sad that my brain only recall 2 or 3 other readers or news after watching 30 minutes of news.

http://www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news/video/nightly-news-full-broadcast-september-23rd-772237379897

After viewing the NBC Nightly News, link to video attached above, I was not surprised to find that 8 out of the 12 stories they covered were negative, three stories were neutral but provoked suspicion, and they ended the segment with one positive story. By ending the segment with a positive story, they are applying the recency-primacy theory to put a positive spin on their mostly "mean world" report. The NBC Nightly News serves mainly an informational function of media. As far as gate-keeping, NBC reported mostly negative events. This impacts the viewers reality of the world and probably contributes to the "mean world syndrome" which is the belief that the world and the people in it are more dangerous than it really is. This ties into the cultivation theory which claims that the media "shapes our social reality by giving us a distorted view on the amount of violence and risk in the world." Em Griffin, A First Look at Communication Theory, 7th ed. (Boston, MA: McGraw-Hill, 2009), 352–53.

One of the negative stories was about a video released about the Charlotte police shooting of a black 43 year old man. The video is ambiguous about what is going on which allows viewers to draw their own conclusions. These home videos are becoming very popular and are often ambiguous which tends to polarize people such as the "blue lives matter" vs "black lives matter" vs "all lives matter" debate.
Another negative story showed the suspect of the bombing in New York which most would stereotype as a terrorist due to his ethnicity, which was not mentioned. They just showed a picture of him. This could also play into the mean world syndrome influencing people to think and behave differently towards perceived races and ethnicity.

Another polarizing topic NBC covered is the different ways in which the presidential candidates are preparing which fuels debates about the presidents.

Most of the news cast covered stories of people who are white, middle aged, and appear to be middle class. One of which was about a man who was victimized by gift card scams. Another was about a woman who wants to sue Saudi Arabia for allegedly funding Al Queda. They included Pippa Middleton being victimized by hackers. This contributes to the Cultivation theory and how heavy viewers of media tend to identify with the people portrayed in the media when in reality, heavy viewers tend to be working class and politically conservative. I have observed patterns of behavior in people that could be influenced by media, especially pertaining to the mean world syndrome theory.

I decided to watch Fox6 News at 10pm. Below is my findings in which they are summarized:

FOX6 NEWS at 10pm (30-minute runtime)
3 male / 1 female anchors
16 total coverage stories/ segments

10 stories –
  • 6 bad/ 3 good/ 1 bad/ good (presidential debate)
  • 7/ 10 times white males presented the stories (age 28-45)
  • 3/ 10 times one female (mix race) (age 27-35) some narration, however the males will end the story
  •   Titles/ stories were “Man Drowns in Lagoon” “Woman Critically Injured in Shooting” “Homicide Trial Scheduled to Begin” “Potential Jobs Coming to Century City (Business Park)” “Presidential Debate” “Robo-Advisor” “Race for the Cure” “Boating Accident, 3 Baseball Players died” “Arnold Palmer Died” “Harvest Fair”

6 segments –
  • 3 good/ 1 bad/ 2 weather which was bad (storms), but paraphrased as an overall good
  • 5/ 6 times white males presented the segments and narrated them (age 28-45)
  • 1/ 6 times a female (mix) helped introduced a segment with a male
  • Titles/ Segments were “Home Opener” “Fox6 Storm Center” “Weather Experts” “Fox6 Sports Blitz” “Brewers Blast” “Swan Song for Braun” “Emotional Win (for Packers)”

Analysis:
Majority of the stories/ segments that shown footage contained twice as more white men than women of any race or men of different race. When it came to stories like “Harvest Fair” or “Race for the Cure,” women and children were mostly shown. Even in the story, “Woman Critically Injured in Shooting,” the camera was focused on male police officers. Yes, this does make sense; however, there was no family or other people around. Why can’t there be female officers in the scene? Was there any female officers at the scene? – Well, we will never know because FOX6 is showing what they want to show. Another thing was when the “bad” stories/ segments came on they explained it quickly and swiftly and moved on to the next story which was better than those; therefore the spent more time on those.

I do believe that the Cultivation Theory is true in this case because of how they presented the news stories and the weather. As “Fox6 Storm Center” and “Weather Experts” weather segments were on, they explained the storms that already came as serious, but okay. I think they wanted to express to viewer that storms are serious, yet the storms are okay and you shouldn’t worry about it. I thought it was kind of confusing and humorous. I did find one bit that was well said. The segment “Arnold Palmer Died” told what happen, when it happened, and ended with old videos of him in his earlier days smiling and golfing (with a fade-out transition to commercial). I thought about the segment and wondered: what else did he do outside golfing? I know he is a well-known golfer, but that is all FOX6 said about him. That made me wonder if that was the only thing that people can relate him to, but according to this media outlet it was only golfing. So that made me expand (gatekeeping function) on Arnold Palmer. Maybe the segment (with a little bit of information provided) was meant to make viewers expand and relay information.

Overall, FOX6 did distort reality to their audiences and presented stories locally about the greater Milwaukee area to relate to their audiences. They did show bad and good stories with some distortion and short time limits on bad stories calling them “developing Stories”. FOX6 is a media outlet that effects its local viewers and brings them informational, interpretation, and bonding functions to their stories/ segments. I did find a link that somewhat relates to this broadcast I saw. Click Here.
