Dion McCullum, CTP Blog #4

I am not a big fan of watching the news. Some stories are very informative and spot on, and others disappointing and sad. When I watch the news I'm usually checking for the weather and business closings during the winter.

Earlier this afternoon I sat down for thirty minutes, and watched TMJ4 news streaming channel on my roku television. All the stories from earlier showings were recorded individually, so I was able to watch with no commercials. Below I have created a chart of the various segments I watched, and a brief description of them.

After reviewing my log, I noticed that the news showed an even amount of good, bad, and neutral news. A lot of the issues confirmed my my first thought about the news. Certain topics like the more violent and harmful stories involved black men and women. The reality created is one of balance. It's portrayed as if the world has a nice balance of crime and goodness in the world, far from the truth. The topic choices I believe are target chosen, to make the viewers feel a certain way. I believe every age group and race are targeted.

  1. I think that its good that TMJ4 shows an even amount of good, bad and neutral stories. It helps shape society by showing us not all the bad things going on in our world. If every news station was like this do you think our reality of society would be different?
