Dion McCullum, CTP Blog #1

Is the business world a place for a mother with a lot on her plate? This a question that lingers every now and then into my thought process. Growing up my mother was a stay at home mom who could never really break into the working field. I recall her having several different jobs while I was growing up but none really worked out because her priority as a mother always came before work related things such as overtime or deadlines. Back then my parents viewed parenthood as no time for a personal life and no time to further your education. That very ideal is what made me want to do it all and be limitless with my aspirations and goals but at the same time be able to manage them successfully.

My professional goal is to break into the world of business. I love the idea of being my own boss and being able to run the business the way I want to. At this point I'm not sure what specific area of business I would like to go into but I have a few ideas. Opening up a recreation center or daycare to help out the children interests me a lot, being that I am a mother myself. I know the struggles of finding affordable child care and after school services for children. Opening up a business that caters to the needs of a community such a laundromat or grocery store interests me as well.  I am a mother, a student, a church member, a daughter , a sister and many more titles. I want to be the change in my family that says you must be limited to one title in life. At times it gets hard but I feel the doubt and worry is the biggest odd against you. I would love to be the change and help that many people need to help thrive in their own lives.
Not everyone comes from the same walks of life, has the same life story, or communicates the same. That is the very reason I decided to study communication. I believe communication is very important and everyone needs it. It not only allows you to get your views and thoughts across to someone else but allows you to try and understand theirs as well. Learning to effectively communicate with others helps in your personal life, the professional life, and especially in networking. I want to be able to positively incorporate the tools I learn from my communication courses into my everyday living. The aspect of communication that interests me the most is intrapersonal. Intrapersonal communication is basically when you talk to yourself. You don't need a receiver or anyone to respond or listen to you. I love this communication aspect because it allows you to self check and get your thoughts together most of the time. I believe getting a better understanding on what communication really means will allow me to better my skills and understand the lives of my future employees and their situations.
So again I ask,  is today’s modern woman taking on more than she can handle? Absolutely not! If there is a will, there is a way. With a lot of communication, a good support system, and determination balancing motherhood, a job, a social life, and school can be accomplished.

  1. Dion, your professional goal is awesome and you have a lot of great ideas about what you want to do and a lot to offer to our people in our community. I identify with you about being the 1st generation perusing a degree. Our moms and grandmas focused more in the family and they give us the best. They give up their dreams, to make sure all of their kids have better opportunities in life. This communication class will help us to do better every day, develop our skills, and will give us the opportunity to reach our future goal.
