For me I can relate to this topic first hand because like i've said before, i've worked in retail for about six years. When I first started at my job, we had a manager, we all had someone to look up to and show us the way and how certain things were to be done. After a couple of years they moved our store manager to another location and left my location without a manager. For about a year we had no manager and no one who was ready to fill those shoes, so we all kind of just went with the flow of things; but things got messy..FAST.

Because no one was in charge the communication between us all became non-exsistent. Certain tasks like zoning, inventory, and regular protocol were no longer being taken into consideration. I think for a while our customers began to notice as well because our sales went down and so did the over all appearance of the story but of the workers as a team. Because there was no management there was a lot of he said- she said action going on. The way certain situations were handled were never the same as someone else.
After a few months had past the owners I think realized that they needed to have someone in charge, which was by far the best decision my location had made. We were planning on moving locations and when we did we were finally appointed the new manager and we all talked about what we thought was working, and what wasn't and made plans to make the store better than it ever was. We all communicated and heard each other out and I think that has really helped us.
Five months later (today) our numbers are better than they've ever been, all of the employees get along so well, and we truly are a family. When there is confusion we talk to each other and all come to a mutual understanding with everything and it's been better than ever!
Wow,I couldn't imagine anyplace without a manager. I'm sure things were supper un-organized. Like the reading mentions, things normally go smoother if there is a leader. I'm happy for you that things are now in place!
ReplyDeleteTo have a job without a manager is terrifying. I could only imagine how bad that store must have been for those few months. It really is important for someone to step up and be a leader so things can run smoothly. I'm glad the owners finally realized they needed to hire someone as a manager because it sounds like the store is doing much better now.
