Church turns 175 yrs. Old- Good news
There is a church in Milwaukee that
turned 175 years old and it was there before Milwaukee became a city and
Wisconsin became a state. It showed a lot of white people in most of the video (they
were above 50) and shots of the church. The last few seconds they showed some
black girls (teens) painting to celebrate.
Child calls 911- Bad News
(This story was about a black girl
(less than 10) call 911 to report her mom (in her 30’s) having a stroke. The
girl learned about the warning signs of a stroke just before her mother had
one. They showed a few seconds of the 911 tape. This was a very brief story.
There weren’t many details, they literally said the girl called 911 and knew
her mother was having a stroke, showed a few seconds of the tape, asked the
girl how she felt and ended it. I feel there was much more to the story, I don’t
think the mother even spoke and there were no details about the mom’s
condition. It was rushed.
Deer in Water- Good News
There was a deer stuck in the river,
the police was called and said there was nothing they can do about it so three
people (men; 1 black and 2 white (mid 30’s-40’s)) came out to help the deer.
They fashioned a rope around one man while another man lowered him and the last
one was waiting to receive the deer. They successfully got the deer out of the
water and was being carried the back of a car where they claimed someone drove
the deer out of the city. I agree with them that it was nice to see so many
people show up to support the rescue of the deer.
Golfer Dies- Good (but sad) News
Arnold Palmer died (a white man) 1929-2016.
They said that he changed golf forever and list his many accomplishments.
White woman and man give news on
sports (late 30’s- mid 40’s).
The first segment only shows black
athletes talking about the game they played. (30’s) -Good News
The second segment was about a
brewer baseball player that may be traded and the player talked about the possibility
of being traded. He was white. (30’s) -Neutral News
The last segment was about two
golfers playing in a game and the money difference between 1st place and 2nd
place. (50-60’s) -Bad News
The reality that is presented is
that there is good and bad things that happen in the world. I noticed a pattern
of good, bad, good, bad, good, bad. There were mostly white people in the news,
it lacked diversity. White people as the reading in 15.3 states are over represented
and this portion of the news clearly shows that especially the last segment in
sports. That could have been left out it felt more like a filler. It also
states in that same section of the reading that African Americans are primarily
shown in stories about athletics and it is shown in this news portion where the
first news on sports featured only black men. Otherwise African American people
are underrepresented like in the segment about the little black girl calling
911 how that clip was so short and lacked a lot details and care.
I agree that there's a pattern with good and bad news, maybe they do that to just balance it out. I also noticed there's no diversity in the news at all, especially on Fox 6 and Wisn 12. I wish they would have talked more about the little girl who called 911 for her mother. I also would have liked to hear what her mother had to say and how her condition is now.
ReplyDeleteI love the way you made note of weather the segment was good or bad news. That shows that there is such diversity with the news they are putting out. I also like the way you got into detail about that segment and then your overall feeling regarding the channel.
